Chapter 7: Ethernet Problems
7-4 Troubleshooting Guide
7.3 Observing Excessive Collisions on a Network Repeated Segment
Collision (CLN) LED or network management application, such as SPEL or SPECTRUM, indicates that there are more
collisions than expected on a repeated segment of the network.
Are there any transceivers attached to the segment with the SQE feature enabled?
YN
Is the segment connected to a standalone hub such as an SEHI?
YN
It is assumed that the segment is connected to a modular hub. Collisions problems can be isolated to a particular
MIM in the hub by unplugging each MIM and observing if there is any reduction in the number of collisions.
Unplug a MIM and note if there is a reduction in collisions.
Was there a reduction in collisions?
YN
Plug in the MIM, then unplug another.
Was there a reduction in collisions?
YN
Repeat this process until all the MIMs in the hub have been checked. If after checking all the MIMs in the
hub there is still no reduction in collisions, call Cabletron Technical Support.
The collision problem is now isolated to a MIM. The collision problem can now be isolated further to an end user
device and the associated cabling by disconnecting one user device cable at a time from the MIM and noting if
there is a reduction in collisions.
At the MIM, disconnect the cable coming from a user device and note if there is a reduction in collisions.
Was there a reduction in collisions?
YN
Repeat this process until all the user devices have been checked. If there is still no reduction in collisions after
checking all of the user devices connected to the MIM, call Cabletron Technical Support.
The problem may be with the cabling or the attached user device. Check the cable and device to make sure the
cabling used is the correct one and that it is not damaged. Also check the device for any indications of a problem.
Correct as necessary. Then reconnect the user device to the MIM.
Did the number of collisions remain reduced?
YN
Call Cabletron Technical Support.
Congratulations, the problem is solved. Reconnect all the other user device cables that were disconnected from
the MIM.

Do not reconnect the cable and unplug a cable from another user device.
