Chapter 5: Routing Problems
5-8 Troubleshooting Guide
5.4 Cannot Communicate with Another IP Network, Network Not Listed or Listed as
Unreachable in Router Routing Table
Cannot communicate with another IP network. Entered the command, show ip route to display the routing table, but
the IP network is either not listed or listed as being unreachable.
Depending on the complexity of the whole network, there may be one or more routers between your router and the network
that is unreachable. It is strongly recommended that you obtain a network map to determine the router(s) that are directly
connected to the unreachable network.
Do you know the router(s) that are directly connected to the unreachable network?
YN
Check with your Network Administrator for this information. Without it you cannot troubleshoot the problem any further.
If unsure what to do, call Cabletron Technical Support.
Obtain the IP address and password assigned to the router directly connected to the unreachable network. Telnet to that
router and set it to the Enable Mode. Enter the
show config command to display the configuration for that router to
determine which interface is connected to the unreachable network.
Type in:
show int
Press Return.
Does the display indicate that the interface connected to the unreachable network is up and the line protocol is up?
YN
Type in:
show config
Press Return.
The interface configuration displays.
Does the display indicate that the interface is “shutdown”?
YN
Call Cabletron Technical Support.
Type in:
config t
Type in: int followed by the name of the interface such as: e 0.
For example:
int e 0
Press Return.
Type in:
no shutdown
Press Return.
Press CTRL-Z, then press Return.
Type in:
wr
Press Return.
To check if the interface is “up” and the protocol is “up”, type in:
show int
Press Return.
Are the interface and protocol up?
YN
Call Cabletron Technical Support.
If you are doing a Telnet session from your router to the unreachable router, exit the Telnet session as follows:
Type in:
exit
Press Return. Otherwise, Telnet to your router and enter the enable mode.
The router enable prompt (this is the host name followed by #)
is displayed.
Type in:
show IP route
Press Return. The routing table of the router displays.
Does the unreachable network appear in the routing table and is it “reachable”?
YN
Check both routers to make sure that they are running the same routing protocol.
