5.3 Device Cannot Establish IP Communication with Another Device Across a

Router, but Can Establish IP Communication Locally

Cannot establish IP communication from a PC across a router to a device in another network. See Figure 5-1.

Try pinging across the router to other devices on the same network of the unreachable device.

Were you successful?

Can other devices on the same network of the unreachable device ping the unreachable device?

Check the unreachable device for problems.

Make sure the PC default gateway is set to the E0 interface of the router (Figure 5-1). Also make sure the default

gateway of the unreachable device is set to the E1 interface of the router.

From the PC, try pinging across the router to the unreachable device again.

Were you successful?

Access the router Local Management using Telnet or the router Console port.

Set the router to the Enable Mode.

Type in:

show interface

Press Return.

Did the display show:

E0 up,line protocol up and E1 up,line protocol up?

Call Cabletron Technical Support.

Type in:

show ip route

Press Return.

Router table is displayed.

Does the router table list the network of the unreachable device and is that network classified as

reachable?

Go to Section 5.4 to solve problem.

Type in:

ping IP_ address

where IP_address is the IP address of the unreachable device.

Press Return.
