Chapter 6: FDDI Problems
6-2 Troubleshooting Guide
6.1 Workstation on Ethernet Network Cannot Communicate with Server on FDDI
Ring
A workstation (or PC) on the Ethernet network cannot communicate with a server on an FDDI Ring. The Ethernet network
is bridged to the FDDI Ring using a Cabletron Systems FDMMIM bridge module.
Check the FDMMIM module to ensure that it is not in the standby mode.
Is the FDMMIM in standby mode?
YN
Check the frame type to make sure that the Ethernet workstation is not set to the 802.3 frame type.
Is the frame type set to a frame type other than 802.3?
YN
Change the frame type on the Ethernet workstation to match the frame type set on the server attached to the ring.
Can the workstation communicate with the server?
YN
The DNI card in the server may not be configured correctly. Check the Startup.ncf file on the server.
Is the “Set Maximum Physical Receive Packet Size” set to at least 1518?
YN
Set the maximum packet size to 1518.
The frame type (Ethernet-802.2, -802.3, -II, or SNAP) being used on the workstation and server may not be
the same.
Are the frame types different?
YN
Call Cabletron Technical Support.
Set the workstation and server to use the same type frame and try to connect with the server.
Can the users connect with the server?
YN
Call Cabletron Technical Support.
Congratulations, the problem is solved.
Are both the workstation and server set for the same frame type?
The frame type (Ethernet-802.2, -802.3, -II, or SNAP) that is being used on the workstation and server may
not be the same.
Are the frame types different?
YN
Call Cabletron Technical Support.
Set the workstation and server to use the same type frame and try to connect with the server.
