APPN Application
Advanced Peer-to-Peer Networking (APPN) is a significant extension to IBM’s Systems Network
Architecture (SNA).
APPN builds upon the strengths of traditional SNA networks, which include reliability,
predictability and performance, and adds the necessary network functions to aid the construction
of complex networks of peer SNA nodes.
The APPN protocol utilizes a client-server architecture that distributes network control functions
between an APPN end node (the client) and a network node (the server). While end nodes provide
network access to end users, network nodes comprise the APPN network backbone. Network
nodes provide topology management, resource management, optimized routing, and network
management to end nodes. This approach significantly reduces the need for network definitions,
easing network growth and simplifying network maintenance.
There are two APPN applications:
• APPN (ibmAPPNApp)
• APPN Session (AppnSessApp)
APPN Views
Five application-specific subviews are available for the APPN application from
the ibmAppnApp icon:
• Configuration, which displays the APPN Information View.
• APPN Topology, which displays the Global Topology View.
• Class of Service, which leads to Class of Service Tables View.
• Directory Info, which displays the Directory Performance View.
• Local Topology, which displays the APPN Local Topology Information
View.
